aragorn stands before the council of elves. elrond studies him for a moment, then steps forwards and speaks.

…well, Mr. Aragorn. It would appear you’ve been leading two lives…

elrond holds up a broken sword hilt, studies it as he walks in a circle around aragorn and the council chamber

in one, you are Aragorn, heir to Isildur and the throne of Gondor. You carry the blood of kings, and are the last hope to unite the race of Men.

in the other, you go by the ranger nickname ’strider’. You spend all your time in the wilderness, have been seen freely consorting with hobbits and dwarves, and are guilty of virtually every tracker crime for which we have a law.

elrond places the broken hilt on the pedestal, turns to face aragorn

one of these lives has a future, Mr. Aragorn… the other, does not.
