seriously. what the fuck is wrong with me that i can’t even get my new pc to DO anything? i have no idea what’s wrong.
new box, all new parts with the exception of the graphics card, which i had to temporarily steal out of my old pc. new motherboard, new chip, new hard drive, new ram, new case. old but fully functional floppy drive, cd-rom, graphics card, speakers.
so i turn the thing on. nothing happens. okay, i don’t know if it’s even SUPPOSED to do anything. there’s nothing on the drive.
put in the winxp disc scott loaned me. drive spins a bit, stops spinning, nothing.
reboot. drive spins, stops, nothing.
power off. power on, drive spins, stips, nothing.
try the win2k disc dad loaned me. same story.
try the disc that came with the motherboard; maybe i need to install something off that before i can install windows.
drive spins, stops, nothing.
the monitor hasn’t displayed a single thing in all this time. it turns on, then the led blinks to orange and it doesn’t display anything. if i press the menu button, it loads up a big white box with red/green/blue rectangles. press exit, box fades and monitor goes back to power-down mode.
so what the fuck am i doing wrong? what step am i missing? is my video card no good? maybe it died. i can’t really do anything about that though, i don’t have the money to get a new one. if that’s the case, i’m fucked until i get a couple of paychecks, so at least a month.
this is seriously starting to piss me off.
okay, breathe. google.
okay. i’m gonna pop out the modem and slave hard drive(which has all my files, so more reason to set it aside for now…) and see if i can get it working. if not, on the assumption that the graphics card is the problem, i’ll try using wintermute’s card. if THAT doesn’t work, then i’m fucked for a month, and should just focus on putting win2k on wintermute and using him until i can get new parts for deep.
hal can collect (more) dust for all i care.
in fact, i’m going to put hal’s card back and use wintermute’s graphics card anyways. i already know wintermute’s card was compatible with the monitor before, hal i have no idea. okay. this could work still. more later.

Well, if it’s a new PC then perhaps the bios isn’t looking to boot off of the CD drive?

What’s interesting is that apparently he doesn’t see anything. So getting to the bios to change the first boot device probably wouldn’t help too much.
Here is the best place I’ve ever found for computer help. I was active there for a very long time, they’re good people. Might want to post there and see if they can help.
