xp

windows xp is a blinding brilliant light from heaven. it is like looking into the face of god and having him say ‘you are my most beautiful and wondrous creation’…

okay, it’s not that good, but goddamn is it nice to have everything* just work. no effort, no trial and error, no fumbling with different setups. you set shit up the way it ought to work and it just fucking DOES.

and good god, am i glad i got that extra ramstick. how long does it take, from when i push the power button til windows xp prompts me for my password? seven seconds! add another three to type in my password and hit return, and BAM, xp is up and running. maybe another five seconds to get the internet connection.

oh, yes, did i mention we got the wifi hooked up? moved the router to the front hall and i am getting great signal strength and solid speed. expect much picture posting in the near future.

*one exception, my sound still isn’t working. i installed the sound drivers, but it won’t work. it’s looking like a hardware error though, since the driver software actually detects accurately when i have the speakers plugged into the right plugs. but there’s no sound signal to the speakers. they turn on fine, but no signal.

the headphone jack on the front of the tower does get a signal, but it’s spotty; plug the phones in all the way, sound in the left phone. halfway in, sound in the right side. poke the tip of the headphone plug into the jack, full sound. touch it, it falls out.

if the headphone jack worked fine i’d be tempted to ignore it and just use headphones all the time, but since this could well be a sign of a larger issue with the motherboard, i’m going to have to look into it. hopefully if it is flawed i can still return it, if not to fries then to the manufacturer.

wish i’d kept the little plastic case the processor came in. i had a feeling i shouldn’t be throwing it out, but oh well. i might have another somewhere…

at least i can research my malfunctioning sound hardware with my otherwise fully functional pc.

one other thing: i really REALLY wish i had $300 to blow on a vaio c1. but at least the computer i DID buy is really really nice.

How much time is left in your return period? It will say on your receipt. You’ll want to get this dealt with before the return period is up, because if the problem is the motherboard (which it sounds like) you’ll want to exchange it.
