design

my buddy kyle asked me to do some character designs for a story he’s working up, so he’d have something to look at while he was writing it. here’s what i’ve come up wtih so far. time, health, and presence of mind allowing, i should get some color sketches done soon. i also need to scan the other color sketches i’ve done, since everyone i’ve shown them too seems to think they’re not half bad.

these first two are from my full size notebook, while the second two are from my pocket notebook. scanning stuff out of my notebook doesn’t look pretty without serious cleanup. i draw on both sides of the page so it gets pretty crinkled. of course, any finished work i do will be in a real sketchbook with unlined, thicker paper. unfortunately, nobody makes the kind of sketchbook i want. they’re only available in either squarebound hardcover, ie hella heavy, or spiralbound. i hate both types of binding.

what i want is a white printer paper sketchbook bound like the hella badass five star notebooks i buy at freddies for $4 apop. it’s not squarebound, it’s magazine binding. i don’t know the term for it, but it’s the kind where a 90page notebook i is essentially 45 double-width sheets bound in the middle, folded over together into a book. this flattens out much more than any hardcover book(good for scanning) and the binding is much cleaner and more durable than spiral bound pages.

unfortunately, i appear to be the only person in the entire goddamn world who wants a sketchbook like that. honestly, if they made these available for like a week, i would buy as many as i could get my hands on.

maybe i should just start making them for myself. you can get paper in that size, and i know the basics of binding books; trial and error would teach me the rest. hell, i could even buy up extra five star notebooks and steal the covers, if i could find a good way to replicate their curved corners on my white paper.

I’m not certain, but I believe it’s just called “magazine binding”.

Good sketches. I like the klingons.
