[totally hypocritical revised 'special edition']

large lucas is finally giving in to fans demands to release the original unaltered versions of star wars on dvd, but they’ll only be available for three months. this disney vault crap has got to stop.

on the one hand, i’m glad that he’s given up sooner than i expected, and i wouldn’t be surprised if these limited versions sold so well he decided he was wrong after all, and that people do actually want more than his newest revised edition.

on the other hand, the very idea of suppressing the version of the films that made him the success he is today is so old school it’s insane. this kind of thing, for me, ranks up with the riaa and the movie industry and the tv networks desperate struggle to keep people from realizing we’re operating under the waning years of an obsolete distribution system.

from the boards today…

a — C’mon, we’ve been begging, screaming and yelling to get the “Han Shot First” editions on DVD. Now we get them and we’re going to start screaming and yelling about how we were lied to, how this is a money grab, etc….? Let’s, just for a moment, be happy that we’re getting them.

b — This man speaks the truth people. This is a GOOD thing. Not something to complain about.

c — Nobody’s complaining about getting what they want. They’re complaining about the general greed and hypocracy that seems to be inherent in this decision by Lucas/Lucasfilm. I don’t see anything wrong with tempering one’s glee with a bit of disdain for the man involved. He’s certainly earned his share of it.

At the end of the day, however, one chooses to do the Star Wars drug and should be sure to realize that complaining about the dealer does little in the way of good. It’s important to keep that in mind as a frame of reference.

then again, while i still think he’s a dick, i’ll be preordering these as soon as amazon lets me, so he basically wins this round.

I see no reason to be filled with rage.

The originals are available as pretty decent bootlegs already. For three months, you’ll be able to get legit versions.

If you’d already bought the Special Editions, I can understand being mad, as you could end up buying them again. But you didn’t.

If you’re glad these are out, buy them. If not, no-one is making you buy them. If enough people buy them, George will be more likely to rerelease them on future formats.
