okay, so yamaha has a program called vocaloid that works like simpletext on the mac, but with song lyrics, and it sounds good, and it works. so they think, hey, why not release a series of versions as a specific character so you can do genre and such?
being japan, they created hatsune miku, a virtual jpop idol, capable of all kinds of bizarre covers. this has naturally exploded the internet and especially youtube.
here she is covering ievan polkka by finnish group loituma, 30 perfectly looping seconds of which was popularized by an insanely addictive web meme that i’m not even getting into. (well, beyond miku star anyways…)
naturally, there’s a cover of the haruhi dance.
here she is covering world 1-1.
here’s a cover of octopus’s garden, showing the limitations of using a japanese girl’s vocal samples to replicate english lyrics.
here is hatsune miku covering still alive. this is when my brain collapsed.
welcome to the future.
