movies 2008
thank wiki for information collection. here’s my list from their list, of interesting movies set for this year.
feb 22 — be kind rewind - michel gondry, mos def, jack black
feb 29 — semi pro - will ferrell and andre 3000 in a 70s basketball comedy
feb 29 — the other boleyn girl - scarlett johannsen and natalie portman in corsets and cleavage for two hours (does it matter what it’s about?)
mar 7 — the bank job - jason statham, based on the true story of a successful london bank robbery in 1971 that was suppressed by the british government for reasons of national security
mar 7 — 10,000 bc - this would be more interesting if it were a stargate prequel set in 10k bc, as is it looks kind of bland, like a 300 without the historical roots. i should probably check out apocalpyto instead, at least that wasn’t mesopotamians speaking perfect english.
mar 21 — drillbit taylor - three high school freshman hire owen wilson to protect them, written by seth rogen from a story idea by john hughes (yes, that john hughes)
april 4 — leatherheads - george clooney, jon krasinski, and renee zellweger in a 20’s football comedy
april 11 — smart people - dennis quaid, ellen page, sarah jessica parker, and thomas haden church. the tagline ’sometimes the smartest people have the most to learn’ made it sound terrible, but ellen page is always good, and thc appears to be stealing the show. hopefully all his good lines aren’t in the trailer.
april 18 — 88 minutes - college professor / fbi forensic psychologist al pacino has 88 minutes to save his own life
april 18 — the forbidden kingdom - yoen woo ping choreographs jackie chan and jet li, based on journey to the west. except the hero is a random american kid and it’s in english. but all the fight scenes are totally wuxia. i can’t even tell if i’m excited.
april 29 — harold and kumar escape from guantanamo bay - nph ftw
may 2 — iron man
may 9 — speed racer
may 16 — prince caspian
may 16 — midnight meat train - clive barker refused to let them change the title of his 1984 horror story about murders on a nyc subway. it’s been moved to la, has vinnie jones as creepy guy in suit, and looks good. it’s not gay porn but it does sound hilarious when trailer guy says it out loud.
may 22 — indy 4
june 6 — kung fu panda — cgi animated animals fighting evil with kung fu is either absolutely good or poop. hard to say which just yet. jack black doesn’t seem to add much with his voice work.
june 6 — you don’t mess with the zohan - adam sandler as an israeli commando who escapes to nyc to be a hairstylist
june 13 — the happening - new m night shyamalan. a few duds aside, he’s still a fantastic director, so i’ll give it a shot. mark wahlberg, zooey deschanel, the end of the world.
june 13 — the incredible hulk - you wouldn’t like edward norton when he’s angry
june 20 — get smart - steve carell, anne hathaway, alan arkin, and the rock. i love it.
june 20 — ponyo on a cliff - new miyazaki
june 27 — wall-e - new pixar

july 25 — x-files 2
aug 1 — the mummy: tomb of the dragon emperor - the gang returns to fight undead chinese warlord jet li and his terra cotta army
aug 8 — the pinapple express - seth rogen and james franco vs evil drug lord gary cole. go check the trailer
aug 8 — blindness - an epidemic causes blindness across a city, collapsing society. directed by fernando meirelles (city of god), filmed in sao paulo, montevideo, and toronto. this will probably be gorgeous.
aug 15 — dragonball - based on the manga/anime which was itself based on journey to the west. spike from buffy/angel will play primary villian lord piccolo, and chow yun fat is master roshi. produced by steven chow, which gives me hope that it’ll be worthwhile.
aug 15 — the international - tom twyker directs clive owen and naomi watts, investigating corruption and murder in an international banking firm
aug 15 — star wars: clone wars - cgi film that leads into the new cgi series
aug 29 — babylon ad - vin deisel and michelle yoeh in a post-apocalpytic french-ish action movie
sep 12 — punisher: war zone - more elements from the comics, a new actor, supposedly r-rated, who knows

2008 — hell ride - quentin tarantino presents
2008 — the haunted world of el superbeasto - a rob zombie animation
2008 — zack and miri make a porno - new kevin smith
also uwe boll’s farcry, the warren ellis scripted castlevania animation, a japanese resident evil cgi film, a new spawn movie, a movie about wikipedia, and war inc, a dark political satire with john cusack and hilary duff which looks decent.
